Prostate health

Let's talk about prostate health. When it comes to men's health, prostate health is an important topic that is not always openly talked about. Oftentimes there is little common knowledge and even misinformation about the prostate. Here are a few basic points regarding prostate health to help shed some light on this important topic.

So what is the Prostate?

The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder in men. Its primary role is to support reproductive health by producing fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. While small in size, it can have a big impact on urinary and sexual health.

Prostate Cancer screening

The recommended age to start prostate cancer screening is age 50 for men of average risk. Those that are higher risk may be recommended to start screening as early as age 40.

Who is considered high risk? African American men. African American men are about 1.7 x more likely to develop prostate cancer and 2 times more likely to have fatal outcomes. African American men are more likely to develop prostate cancer younger than non african american men. Those who have a family history of prostate cancer and other cancers like breast cancer and colorectal cancer are also at a higher risk.

How is screening done?

A blood test called a PSA or Prostate screening antigen can be done to check for abnormal levels that can suggest prostate cancer.  PSA can be done every 1 -2 years. PSA does not diagnose prostate cancer, it is an important tool for screening.  An elevated PSA level should be followed up on for more evaluation.

A digital prostate exam is not considered a screening for prostate cancer but it can be a helpful tool in checking for prostate abnormalities or changes.

Symptoms of prostates issues

Often there are no symptoms of prostate cancer, especially in early stages. Symptoms of prostate cancer can be rare. This is why it's important to make sure you are having regular check ups and that you discuss any signs, symptoms, concerns and your family history with your healthcare provider.

Prostate disorders such as BPH, benign prostatic hyperplasia are more common causes of symptoms . Noticing blood in urine or sperm, change in urination, scrotal or pelvic pain can be a sign that there is an issue with your prostate and should be addressed.
