Mens Health: The Basics to Wellness

June is Men's Mental health awareness month. We wanted to take this time to address wellness tips specific to men. There are multiple programs, articles, podcasts and even entire health clinics dedicated to women's health and wellness. That's not always the case for men. Prioritizing health and healthy living is important for everyone. We all need to incorporate basic healthy lifestyle modifications, such as proper rest, regular exercise, healthy balanced diet, adequate hydration, and prioritizing good mental health. When it comes to men's health and wellness in particular it is important to highlight a few specific topics.

Basic care: Basic health and wellness starts with basic healthcare. Establishing a primary care provider and obtaining routine check ups is important and can be an excellent tool to preventative care and preventing chronic illness.

Routine screening:

Annual blood work including

  • cholesterol testing

  • screening for diabetes

  • metabolic screening which includes important levels like kidney function.

Cancer screenings including

  • Colon cancer screening which is recommended to start at age 45 for those at average risk . Screening recommendation age may be younger for those at high risk.

  • Prostate cancer screening is recommended to start at age 50 for average risk. Those at high risk should have testing done earlier.

Who is considered high risk?  African American men and those with a family history of prostate cancer especially if the relative is a father , brother or son who was diagnosed before age 65

Healthy living: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle including a healthy balanced diet, regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight. A healthy BMI for men is 18.5- 24.9.

Decrease your risk of serious health conditions by avoiding tobacco and nicotine, avoiding illicit drugs, avoiding alcohol and practicing safe sex practices.

Mental Health maintenance:  Last year 1 in 8 men were affected by mental health disorders. Men are traditionally under diagnosed and are less common to report symptoms. Acknowledging and routinely checking in on your mental health and wellness is essential. Speak up when you have symptoms , questions or concerns concerning mental health and wellness. Put routine practices in place to reduce stress, reflect and feel good.
